I’ve been doing the damn thing since 1984, being a DJ that is... I did the whole Technics 1200 and Numark mixer thing back in its virtual beginnings but rolled with the times much to the chagrin of my purist comrades in the business. In the 80’s it was vinyl (hence the 1200’s), the 90’s saw CD’s (I loved my old Denon) and now of course it’s digital baby!

My professional career (day job) took off and my moonlighting career of DJ/Entertainer took a backseat, but now that my business is pretty much running itself now my interests in entertainment have returned. So now I fish in or practice for professional bass tournaments by day and entertain by night! I got the bug again around this last Christmas (2008) and went on a shopping spree.

This is what I’m rolling with these days…
VDJ 6.0.1 & Serato Scratch Live SL-3 hardware w/SL 1.9 software, an Odyssey FZ12CDIW
Flight Case adorned with 2 Pioneer CDJ-400's CD/Software controllers, Pioneer DJM-800 Professional Mixer w/Effects utilizing Serato 1.9, VDJ 6.0.1 or Pioneer DJS 1.6001, Numark DMC2 w/CUE 5.2.1, Numark C3USB mixer, Pioneer MEP 7000 19” rack mounted multimedia player utilizing Serato Scratch Live 1.9 and Pioneer DJS 1.6001 with three (3) Western Digital 1 terabyte My Book USB 2.0 external hard drives and keyboard, BBE 882i Sonic Maximizer, dbx DriveRack PX, TC Helicon Voiceworks Plus for karaoke and vocal recording, TC Electronics M350 Dual Engine Processor for karaoke and recording, Gemini KM-707 Pre-Amp Mic Mixer for karaoke, Monster Power PRO 2500 Power Conditioner. Roadrunner 19” 11 space by 16 space slant mixer rack mount DJ coffin on castors. 1.5 terabyte Seagate FreeAgent eSata external hard drive, Toshiba Qosmio X305 SLI Gaming & Multimedia Laptop running 64 bit Vista Ultimate, Acer Laptop Running 32 bit Vista Home Premium exclusively for the Pioneer MEP 7000 and DJS software. B52 Matrix 1000 V2 speaker system with Pro Line stands, Sennheiser e945 mics & Shure SM58 mics. For producing and recording I have various M-Audio Midi products and array of digital multi-track recording apparatuses, DAWs & VSTs such as Pro Tools, CuBase, FL Studio, Ableton Live, Sony Acid, SoundForge, Audacity, Adobe Audition and much more. Allen & Heath XONE:XD-53 Pro-DJ headphones, Pioneer HDJ 1000 headphones, On Stage 10' Lighting Stand, Chauvet Scorpion RG laser DMX light, Chauvet Vue VI DMX rotating LED Cluster Moonflower, American DJ Vertigo Tri LED, American DJ Aggressor TRI LED, 2 American DJ Jewel LED Advanced Color Moonflower, two Strobes. ADJ DynoFog II. Two VIZIO 22” LCD dual HDMI monitors for karaoke, music videos and effects, monitor is mounted on a custom made LCD stand/mic holder. HDMI cables to connect to a much larger LCD/Plasma or Hitachi HD projector. 80,000 FLAC & mp3 songs and at least 50,000 Karaoke files on one of the 1.5 TB hard drives and over 200 CDG's. I use a Numark D2 Director as a backup digital media player just in case. I am happy with my choices in gear.

Up until last year I'd actually been out of the DJ world since the late 90’s but kind of somewhat kept in touch with equipment trends but never lost touch with the music.

PEACE!!!

Update: I've been using my Akai APC40 Ableton Live Controller in addition to VDJ. I use them together. The Akai APC running Ableton Suite 8 (the full version that goes beyond Ableton Live 8) on a separate laptop allows me to create my own samples with snippets of songs as sound effects.

I play them through my Pioneer DJM-800 mixer using it's built-in effects then tweak the parameters in Ableton, assign them to a channel then call them up at the press of a button for added effects and samples. The APC40 acts as a full on MPC sampler. I love it!

Update 2: I 'va recently added a Sennheiser G3 wireless mic system with an e965 capsule to my arsenal. Also I've doubled my laptops, one for controlling VDJ and the other for Ableton Live Suite 8. For the additional mic, and other hardware I needed to add a mixing board with a built in FireWire soundcards and for studio and live recording. I'm now the proud owner of a PreSonus StudioLive 16.4.2!

Hey man, iv just watched your video on how to hook up virtual dj with two cdj400's, its really helpful however im having a few problems was wondering if you could help me out.... i have a mac and have managed to hook the cdjs up however both tracks are only playing through one channel on the mixer ?? i noticed on your video that you selected the two sound card option and that the numbers need to be different i.e cdj400 1 and cdj400 2... ? when i hook them up it only gives me the option of cdj400 for both of them and im guessing this is where the problem is occuring ? how do i change it so each cdj400 is assigned a different number ? would be eternally grateful for your help ! peace, chris

Hello, My name is Cris.. i am new with the virtualDJ but i am a quick learner. I was wondering if you can help me set up a karaoke system. I am trying to help my mom and we want to do karaoke here in our club so i have no idea where to start... i have the program, labtop, club, i wanted to buy a projector and a screen to connect to the program i dont no which models are best to use and if this is worth the trouble because is there a limit to how many karaoke songs there is? if there are unlimited methods of getting karaoke songs with subtitles then its Def. worth it... please help a partner out! I would be grateful thank you.

Yo Rude !
I´ve got my 2000´s now and can say that they are nice pice of art !
They are not much different with Vdj if I compare to my cdj 400s, but in the real mode without any program it feels like a peace of cake to mix anything :-)
